It’s ok…you can finish it!  CHRISTMAS!!!!  It is around us anyway.  Last weekend we attended a couple of different area celebrations of the season and, might I say, had a festive time!

Gil made his way to Christmas on the Square in Camdenton and visited with many people!  He made all sorts of new friends (even new animal friends at the petting zoo)!

There was music, free stuff, lots of candy, the jolly man himself and, of course, our very own dancing shark!  You can see the video on our YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRP3O3RPoD0.

Sunday, Gil made his way to Breakfast with Santa hosted by the Camden County Relay for Life.  It was an extremely fun and successful event!  Fun was had by all as crafts were made, games were played and Ol’ St. Nick showed up, along with Gil!  And, to top off this awesome event, they raised over $1,000 for the American Cancer Society!

If you had the pleasure of visiting the park in our 2009 season, you probably got to see our magnificent mascot, Gil Shark!

Gil was most certainly a hit this summer.  He made many appearances, posed for numerous photos, walked miles around the park and, of course, gave hundreds of hugs.  In the midst of all this fun, Gil’s plush exterior got a little icky, for lack of a better term.  Not to mention the vast amount of sweat that poured inside! Yuck!

Needless to say, Gil needs a good bath, which we can’t provide here at the park.  We have to send him off to Scollon Productions, the company that built Gil.  The only thing left to do now is find a box big enough for him to travel in!

Columbia was the place to be on Sunday 7/19/09 for NASCAR fans…or, in particular, fans of Columbia’s very own Carl Edwards.  His #99 car was on display at the Subway/Baskin Robbins on Forum Blvd. and boy, was it a hit!

Gil Shark was there to entertain the crowd and some people even got free tickets just by being lucky enough to be there!!!  Gil posed for pictures both with and without the car.  He danced and mingled amongst the crowd and was definitely a crowd-pleaser!

If you missed him, come out to the park and you will get your chance….Gil makes appearances often and would love to meet you!

May 30th was a big day for Big Surf.  The reigning Miss Missouri, Lacey Fitzgerald, and all of the contestants going out for the crown in 2009 came to the park for a video and photo shoot!

The girls arrived in high spirits and sporting Big Surf Tees!  They began by signing autographs out by the Wave Pool.  Many of the park’s guests enjoyed visiting with the girls and receiving pictures signed by them.

After the autograph session the girls donned their swimsuits and took part in a fun, exciting photo shoot that consisted of pictures from the Lazy River bridge to the Lazy River, itself, to the entrance of the Wave Pool.  The girls got some great shots taken!  Even a few with our mascot, Gil Shark!

After the shoot, it was free time!  The contestants had a chance to take part in all the excitement that Big Surf has to offer.  For some, it was their first time to the park and for some it was a trip back, but for all, it was nice to have the rest of their time here designated for fun!  They rode everything from Zambezi Falls to the Lazy River and it was a great time for all involved!

The contestants definitely started their pageant week off with bang…we wish them all the luck for Saturday, June 6th, when the new Miss Missouri will be crowned in Mexico, MO!

Opening Day 2009

We had a great day here at the park today with nearly 300 in attendance! The weather is not usually very cooperative at this time of year but today was a wonderful exception. The sun was shining and everyone I talked to (Hi, Caden!) had a wonderful time. It was great to see so many season passes being sold knowing that they will be back time and again this summer to enjoy our beautiful park. (Did anyone notice our new signs?)

The most exciting event today was when Gil the shark was escorted into the park via fire engine with sirens blaring. This was his first appearance at the park but be sure to look for him on all of our television commercials this spring. We’ll look forward to seeing him around here all summer, too.

Don’t forget that if you paid full price today or on Sunday the 24th, you can come back on Monday (Memorial Day) for free – just bring in your paid receipt for an all-day admission.

Drive safely and have a happy Memorial Day!
