Cake Off!

Added: February 24th, 2010 | Be the first to add a comment »

It was a birthday to remember last Saturday at Camden County Relay for Life’s Kick-off Birthday Party!  This year’s theme is “A World with Less Cancer is a World with more Birthdays.”  Since Big Surf is the official host again this year for Camden County’s event, we wanted to join in the festivities last weekend at Stonecrest Mall in Osage Beach.

Gil Shark made an appearance and accepted a Certificate of Appreciation from the Relay committee.   He also handed out Golden Tickets to all the kids in attendance!

The committee had so many activities planned for the day.  There was an opening ceremony, survivor lap, local entertainment, a cake walk in honor of the birthday theme, silent auction, bake sale and kid’s games.  The mall court was adorned in birthday decor and everyone was in the spirit (noisemakers and all)!

The event was a huge success, bringing in over $850.00 for the Camden County Relay for Life!

Mark your calendars now for the 2010 Camden County Relay for Life event at Big Surf on June 4, 2010 at 5 p.m.  Hope to see you here to have fun and support a very worthy cause with us!

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like…

It’s ok…you can finish it!  CHRISTMAS!!!!  It is around us anyway.  Last weekend we attended a couple of different area celebrations of the season and, might I say, had a festive time!

Gil made his way to Christmas on the Square in Camdenton and visited with many people!  He made all sorts of new friends (even new animal friends at the petting zoo)!

There was music, free stuff, lots of candy, the jolly man himself and, of course, our very own dancing shark!  You can see the video on our YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRP3O3RPoD0.

Sunday, Gil made his way to Breakfast with Santa hosted by the Camden County Relay for Life.  It was an extremely fun and successful event!  Fun was had by all as crafts were made, games were played and Ol’ St. Nick showed up, along with Gil!  And, to top off this awesome event, they raised over $1,000 for the American Cancer Society!

See us next Saturday at the Lake Ozark Christmas Parade!

BOO!

Halloween 2009 was definitely a spooktacular one for me!  I finally got out after our season ended.  It was great to be with the people again and enjoy myself.

My first stop on Saturday was at Stone Crest Mall’s Kid’s Fun Fest.  They had games, a costume contest and tons of fun for everyone-and what a great turn-out there was!  We had everyone from ninjas to bumblebees and monsters to princesses.  We gave tickets out to the wonderful costume contest winners and I even participated in some of the games…the cookie walk was my personal favorite!

That evening I made my way to the First Baptist Church of Camdenton for their Trunk or Treat event.  It was a blast!  Everyone goes all out to decorate their cars, trucks and SUV’s.  My boss, Darin, even built his own car…to go along with their theme, of course!  We gave away a season pass to one lucky trick-or-treater and gave out tons of candy.

All in all, Halloween turned out to be fun for everyone!  I am looking forward to getting out around town for some really great Christmas celebrations…so keep checking back and I will keep you posted on where I will be!

Was this really a whole week ago?  My, time flies when you’re having fun.  Check out Gil cutting a rug to, yup, the Village People:

Gil at Kidsfest

It was very hot in that suit.  Gil will be at the water park all summer.  Come down and see him!  You never know, he may start strutting his stuff again if you ask nicely!

Jefferson City Kidsfest… See you There?

Added: June 12th, 2009 | Be the first to add a comment »

Tomorrow, Saturday June 13, is the annual Jefferson City Kidsfest.  We will be there, with bells on, and possibly with a shark, too.  We’ll be giving away lots of groovy free stuff, and also there will be Golden Tickets going to worthy candidates.  We haven’t quite worked out what people are going to have to do to earn one of these - they are good for one free admission until the end of this month, if you remember - but we will devise some sort of task that will need to be completed before we hand those babies out.  If anyone has any good ideas as to what would be an appropriate task, let us know…

Kidsfest is always a riot.  There’ll be clowns, face painters, hayrides, and a petting zoo, and tons of other cool stuff.  Oh yes, and it’s COMPLETELY FREE.  It takes place on the High Street in Jefferson City between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  It looks as if the weather is going to co-operate, so it should be a lot of fun.  Please come out and say hi to us if you’re attending.  We’d love to see you.  And - how about this - mention this blog and we’ll give you a Golden Ticket, no questions asked.

Any thoughts?

Added: May 21st, 2009 | 1 Comment »

We need your help!

As you probably know, Saturday, May 23 is the opening day of our season and one of the many things that will be happening that day is the grand entrance (on the back of a fire truck, no less) of our new mascot, Gil the Shark.  We’ve got a red carpet and everything.

Anyway, we were all wondering what the best music would be to have playing over the loudspeakers as he arrives.  One suggestion was Mack the Knife (”Oh the shark has pearly teeth dear…”).  Someone else suggested “Fins” by Jimmy Buffet.  You get the general idea.  Anyway, let us have any thoughts you have.  You never know, if you come up with a really inspired suggestion we may throw some free stuff your way by way of thanks…

Alex G

Facebook Fun

Added: May 16th, 2009 | Be the first to add a comment »

We’re having some fun on facebook this weekend.  A new group has been formed, called “We Want to See the Big Surf Shark Dance at Artrageous Friday!”  Please join it - we want to see how many people we can get!  If you scroll to the bottom of the page there’s also a short video of the shark strutting his funky stuff in the parking lot at Sam’s and buying some toilet roll, to the general bemusement/amusement of the other shoppers!

Smile Please

Added: May 1st, 2009 | Be the first to add a comment »

On Wednesday evening we had a great time at the Subway/Baskin Robbins in Columbia, participating in the annual 31-cent-a-scoop night to benefit local firefighters.  I wore the shark costume for about an hour and a half and got to hug an awful lot of kids.  We gave away a ton of Golden Tickets and took lots of photos like these:

im000496

The funny thing is that when I woke up on Thursday morning, my jaw was aching.  Know why?  Because in every single one of those photos, although you would never know it of course, I’m smiling.  Grinning like a lunatic, in fact.  It’s human nature, I suppose - when you see a camera pointed at you, you smile, even when you know that nobody can see you doing it.  Besides, it’s not hard to smile when everyone else is so happy.

Having to pose for endless photos and grinning like an idiot - it was just like getting married all over again.  Only with better ice cream.  Oh yeah, and a shark suit.

Alex G.

PS:  Here are even more photos of Wedneday’s event.
