Children’s Safety - Code Adam

Added: August 5th, 2009 | Be the first to add a comment »

We all know how easy it is for a child to get away from their parents.  One quick curious look at a wandering butterfly just 10 feet away and they can disappear into a crowd.

At Big Surf, we take these situations very seriously.  That’s why we have a Code Adam routine when we encounter a panicked parent trying to locate their lost child.

The front gate shuts down immediately - no one in or out.  Every lifeguard, and admissions and management staff available positions themselves in the park to search for the missing one.  Overhead announcements are made to notify the child to go to a specific spot, usually the front gate.  The whole process generally takes no more than one or two minutes and usually ends up with the lost child being unaware that they were even lost.

So if you’re ever at Big Surf and find yourself in the unenviable position of not being able to find your child, you can rest assured that our knowlegeable staff will be there to help in any way we can.

Free life jackets!

Added: August 1st, 2009 | 1 Comment »

As you will know if you have visited this blog regularly, there is nothing more important to us than the safety of our guests.  That’s why last year we decided to make an investment that we have come to celebrate every day - we purchased life jackets in just about every kid size imaginable so that parents can rest safe that their non-swimming children (and even their swimming children) can enjoy themselves safely in our park.  We are always pleased to see kids - especially really little ones - running around with these things on.  Although probably not as pleased as their parents.

Best of all?  They’re free to you.  We don’t charge a cent for ‘em.  We’re just happy to see everyone safe and having a great time.  That’s reward enough for us.

Safety First - Fun Always

Added: June 16th, 2009 | Be the first to add a comment »

Safety is a simple word but a very complex concept.  It’s one that everyone here at the park strives to be better at every day.

A fun day must also be a safe day.

Our safety program starts from the day a new employee starts.  They must become familiar with park policies and procedures.  Then as a guard you are tested for raw swimming abilities before you are even allowed into our guard training program.  If accepted, they receive lifeguard training as set by the American Red Cross.  This includes basic water surveillance, water rescue, first aid, CPR, AED training and other lifesaving skills. Along with this they receive training on the rules of operation for the various rides in our facility.

Once they pass the test, all lifeguards are required to attend weekly training sessions to ensure that their skills remain in excellent shape.  They are also subject to random testing by the American Red Cross.

The guards are the most visible staff in the park, but we also have a top notch maintenance department that keeps everything in superb shape.  So it’s not only safe, but it looks good.

Not to be left out is our admissions and office staff.  They are trained to answer just about any question you can throw at them so hopefully everything is clear before you start your day.

All of our staff are drug tested on the day of hire, and a random sample is tested every two weeks.  We leave NOTHING to chance.

So you see safety is not only a word, but a way of life for us.  Here’s the deal: you follow the rules, we’ll take care of safety.  You have the fun!

See you soon, Darin

The $100,000 toilet

Added: June 4th, 2009 | Be the first to add a comment »

I hope by now you will have seen some of our new commercials on the TV by now, including this one.  See that gleaming, beautiful restroom that Hayley and Samantha are standing in?  That’s our new ladies’ restroom which (along with the men’s, of course) we gutted and completely re-did the winter before last.  We are very, very proud of our new bathrooms.  And while it may seem like an odd topic to write about in our blog, we think it’s kinda important.  After all, if you come and visit with us all day, chances are you’ll be paying a visit at some point… and you should know that they’re super clean, and super deluxe.  As well they should be, since they cost more than a small house.  Nothing but the best for our guests, ya know.

We always make a point of going out into the park and asking people how their days at Big Surf might be improved, and by far the most common answer was “Better bathrooms”.  Well, you spoke, and we listened.

So, in time-honored tradition, may we present the before…

… and… big drumroll, please… the after:

And that, my friends, is how to blow a six figure sum on a bathroom.  Did someone say “palatial”??
