The First Cut

You know the saying, “Beauty is pain?” On October 12th, I lived that. As I lay in the bin at an Osage Beach hardware store, two fine-looking ladies came to what I thought was my rescue.
The first thing they did was push me around in this horrible cage-like contraption. If I had arms and legs, I could’ve crawled out, but I swiftly came to the conclusion that wouldn’t be happening. I was then stuck between two pansies (literally, pansy flowers) in the back of a white van. What a ride that was! If I were a bettin’ man, I’d bet the driver was a racecar driver in his spare time!
We shortly arrived at our destination. I was so relieved until one of the pretty ladies began unpacking some shiny-looking sharp things. The sweat began to pour. I’d always heard stories about this, but had never seen it with my own eyes!
*The following details carry a parental advisory warning a.k.a. very gory stuff!
The pretty lady in the green sweater took me outside and proceeded to cut my top off! The other one approached me and gutted me! She scooped and scraped out my insides. I sat outside in the cold for a while like that with my guts lying on the ground beneath me. The green sweater lady came back out and carried me in, but the pain was not over, it had only begun. She put paper over my face and poked holes all over me. When she took off the paper, it only got worse. She grabbed a really long, sharp thing and I couldn’t watch any longer. What ensued was the worse pain I had ever felt. She sliced and diced pieces of me away for what felt like hours and then, it all stopped.
When I felt it was safe to look, I did. Much to my surprise, it was magnificent-I was magnificent! Never in my life had I felt and looked so wonderful. I was a work of art-a masterpiece!

Me....after the pain.
Dr. Stryker Day 2009

What a great day this has been! The extraordinary bi-annual event called Dr. Stryker Day was a huge success today. The weather couldn’t have been nicer - warm and sunny - and all of the swimmers were brought into the park in a record manner. We’ve had nearly 1700 people here today and everyone seems to be having a swimmingly great time.
We would like to thank Dr. Stryker for this awesome event that he puts on for all of his orthodontic patients down near Lebanon and Waynesville. What a lucky bunch you are - and you all smile so prettily!

See you in 2011!
Big Surf on the Today Show!

Yes, that Today Show.
We were delighted (although, you know, not surprised or anything) that our wonderful water park appeared on NATIONAL TELEVISION this morning. There was footage of Big Surf on the Today Show as they ran down Health Magazine’s list of the top ten best places to go for a healthy beach or lake vacation this year.
We’ll find the footage and post it here as soon as we can.
Very proud!!!
Does Anyone Watch TV Any More?

Here’s a funny thing. I’ve been responsible for all the radio and TV commercials that Big Surf has run for the past three years. It involves an awful lot of work - much head scratching, laughing, and hanging around waiting for inspiration to strike (although it usually doesn’t strike me.). It’s a lot of fun. But the strange thing is that I’ve never actually seen one of these commercials on the television, because as a family we just don’t watch very much, especially during the summer, when there are lots of better things to do outside (like splashing around in a waterpark, for example.) So I am yet to see this little gem anywhere other than on my computer:
Now, I hear lots of compliments about the ads and people often tell me they’ve seen them, but I wanted to ask our blog readers - how often have you seen these ads this summer? Do you watch much TV over the summer, or are you out watching T-ball games and enjoying the summer evenings outside? I think I know what I would rather be doing…
I’d love to hear from you.

Nearly the end of June…

Phew! It’s been hot!! Not that we’re complaining, though.
We’ve been incredibly busy at the park these last few weeks, with record-breaking attendances for this time of year. Amazing what a little sunshine can do! Hard though it is to believe, it’s already nearly the end of June, and that means that some of the promotions that we’ve been running for the first part of our season are due to expire on Tuesday. So we wanted to remind you all that time is running out on these.
First off, the famous Golden Tickets which we have written about so often on this blog. We’ve been giving these little wonders away all summer at various events and as prizes for contests, and the like. They entitle the bearer (provided he or she is under 18) to a free admission to the park DURING JUNE. Got that? So if you have one of these, you need to get moving if you want your free entry!
Also, the Alpha Program ends on Tuesday. This is our way of rewarding academic excellence for our younger guests - any child in 5th Grade or below who has an “A” or equivalent on their report card gets one free entry into the park DURING JUNE. Are you seeing the pattern here?
Of course, there are still many other good offers that will stil be available throughout the summer. Our promotion with Subway is due to continue until Labor Day. And of course, if you buy your tickets online you always get a discounted price, as you do if you come as part of a group of fifteen or more.
Finally, keep an eye on our facebook page for news of a killer promotion for our facebook fans, especially for July 4.

At last, here it is… a video of what went on the day that the Miss Missouri contestants came to Big Surf and cavorted about in the Wave Pool. And did we mention that we were VERY PROUD when none other than MISS LAKE OF THE OZARKS won the whole contest! She will be going to represent Missouri in the Miss America pageant! How cool is that?!?
Anyway, enjoy the video, complete with groovy surfer soundtrack.

Was this really a whole week ago? My, time flies when you’re having fun. Check out Gil cutting a rug to, yup, the Village People:
It was very hot in that suit. Gil will be at the water park all summer. Come down and see him! You never know, he may start strutting his stuff again if you ask nicely!
Jefferson City Kidsfest… See you There?

Tomorrow, Saturday June 13, is the annual Jefferson City Kidsfest. We will be there, with bells on, and possibly with a shark, too. We’ll be giving away lots of groovy free stuff, and also there will be Golden Tickets going to worthy candidates. We haven’t quite worked out what people are going to have to do to earn one of these - they are good for one free admission until the end of this month, if you remember - but we will devise some sort of task that will need to be completed before we hand those babies out. If anyone has any good ideas as to what would be an appropriate task, let us know…
Kidsfest is always a riot. There’ll be clowns, face painters, hayrides, and a petting zoo, and tons of other cool stuff. Oh yes, and it’s COMPLETELY FREE. It takes place on the High Street in Jefferson City between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. It looks as if the weather is going to co-operate, so it should be a lot of fun. Please come out and say hi to us if you’re attending. We’d love to see you. And - how about this - mention this blog and we’ll give you a Golden Ticket, no questions asked.
This is What a Radio Ad looks like

Our creative guru, Tim, recently finished remixing the in-season radio ads, which I have written about before. He sent me a screen shot of his computer in the middle of the mixing process. It looks pretty cool, even if it gave me a bit of a headache and made me grateful that we have him to do this sort of thing for us. Check it out:

No, I don’t know what any of it means, either. These radio ads starting running yesterday. So when you hear it, you’ll also know what it looks like.
Eat Fresh… then Re-Fresh!

We’re proud to announce that today marks the launch of an exciting partnership with mid-Missouri Subway stores. Subway restaurants are well-known for their vibrant approach to great food and healthy eating and they’re a great fit with Big Surf - we’re both about fun, healthy lifestyle choices, family values, great value for money, and community commitment and involvement.
As regular followers of this blog will know, we have been visiting various area Subway restaurants over the past several weeks appearing at fundraisers for various schools, little league teams, etc. with our new shark mascot, Gil (whom, incredibly, we haven’t written about for days). That was a lot of fun, but it was really just a precursor to the main event, which starts now.
Here’s how it works: if you buy a Fresh Value Meal at any participating Subway restaurant, you will receive a voucher which entitles you to get five bucks of up to six Big Surf tickets. Yes, that’s a saving of up to $30.00, just for buying a sandwich! Not bad, huh?
What’s more, every visitor to Big Surf is entitled to an amazing deal package called the Big Surf Dinner Dash - they just need to present their receipt at a participating restaurant and ask for it. You get 2 regular foot-long subs, 4 21 oz. drinks, and 4 bags of chips for the frankly silly price of $14.99.
We’re all very excited about this EXCLUSIVE discount and promotion. If you want discount tickets to Big Surf, this is the only way to get ‘em!
